Alene Gaines’ former husband was Clarence LaVaughn Franklin, born on the 22nd January 1915. The alternative names for him were Clarence LaVaughn Walker and C. L. Franklin. He was the son of the sharecroppers Willie as well as Rachel (nee Pittman) Walker in Bolivar County, Mississippi, United States.

Alene’s former friend was a preacher from the age of just 16 years old. He began his job with an itinerant black preaching network, before making his way to New Salem Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee. He then moved to the pulpit of Friendship Baptist Church in Buffalo, New York, and was named pastor at New Bethel Baptist Church. His sermons were recorded throughout the 1970s, and broadcast sermons by radio on Sundays.

He died on the 27th of July 1984 at Detroit’s New Light Nursing Home. He was 69 when his death. He was interred in Detroit’s Woodlawn Cemetery on North Woodward Avenue.
