Prior to him she got married Harold Nicholas. In the course of an engagement with the Cotton Club, Dandridge met the entertainer and dancer Harold Nicholas. The couple got married in the Hollywood wedding on the 6th of September in 1942.
The wedding was attended by famous Hollywood celebrities including Oscar-winning actress Hattie McDaniel as well as jazz singer Etta Jones, as well as choreographer Nick Castle. But their union was a rocky one that deteriorated because of to Nicholas his sexual promiscuity and inattention. In the year 1948 Nicholas left his wife and children. Dandridge applied for divorce on September of 1950 and was granted the divorce in the month of October.

Dandridge was adamant about the condition of her daughter and didn’t speak publicly about it until a guest appearance on The Mike Douglas Show in 1963.
When she was shooting Carmen Jones (1954) She started an affair with filmmaker Otto Preminger that lasted four years. Preminger gave her advice regarding job issues, requiring that she take on only roles in leading roles. Dandridge regrets later following the advice of Preminger.
Preminger gave her a baby in 1955, and was then forced to undergo an abortion through the studio. The relationship ended when she realized that the Preminger did not intend to divorce his wife in order to marry her. The affair was revealed by the HBO Films biopic The Making of Dorothy Dandridge, in which Preminger was played as a character by Austrian Actor Klaus Maria Brandauer.
Dandridge became engaged to her second husband just after her divorce from Director Otto Preminger. Jack Denison was a Las Vegas restaurant owner who displayed his love to Dandridge by having flowers delivered to her dressing room each day. The 8th of September, 1965 Dandridge phoned her the former sister-in-law and friend Geraldine “Geri” Branton. Dandridge had been scheduled to travel into New York the next day to get ready for her nightclub appearance on Basin Street East.
Branton revealed to biographers that in the long phone conversation Dandridge went from expressing her hope for the future, to singing Barbra Streisand’s “People” in all its entirety before making this incoherent remark shortly before he cut off contact with Branton: “Whatever happens, I am sure you’ll know.”
A few hours later the ex-wife of Jack Denison, Dandridge was discovered naked and in a state of unconsciousness at her home by her manager Earl Mills. An investigation by the Los Angeles pathology institute determined that the cause of death was an accidental overdose of imipramine, an antidepressant. Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office determined that she died from an embolism caused by fat due to an injury to her right foot sustained within five days.
On the 12th of September in 1965 an intimate funeral was held in The Little Chapel of the Flowers The funeral was followed by cremation and her ashes buried within the Freedom Mausoleum in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
