In the early part of 1994, while production in The Burning Season in Mexico the actor was ill after eating sushi. He was airlifted to the health facility located at Los Angeles so he could receive medical treatment, recover and then returned to Mexico for the final film. He was losing pounds and had become physically deficient due to his illness.

On the 16th of October, 1994 Julia as well as Poloway went to an evening at Metropolitan Opera in New York Then, shortly after Benjamin Rafael Julia’s dad started experiencing abdominal pain and was transported via ambulance North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, Long Island. At initially, he did not seem to be concerned about his condition and was seen rereading the script for his part as Desperado in his hospital bed, however his condition began to deteriorate. The night of October 20th Benjamin Rafael Julia’s father was struck by an injury to his brain, fell into a coma and was placed to life support. A few days later on the 24th of October 1994, he died at 54 years old due to complications of the stroke. He not regained consciousness.
