It can be difficult to learn how to charge AirPods Pro, as with many other Apple earbuds. Is it possible to simply charge the AirPods Pro with the case? Do the earbuds need to be charged with the case?

To charge the AirPods Pro, the earbuds must be kept in the case.

How the Apple AirPods Pro charges

Here’s a quick overview of charging AirPods Pro. You can skip to step 1 if you prefer to jump straight to the steps.

The AirPods Pro Case

Your AirPods Pro earbuds come with a case that includes a battery. This cable can charge your AirPods Pro via the included lightning-to-USB-C cable. Even if the case is not connected to a power source, this stored power can still be transferred to your AirPods Pro headphones. This means you can charge your AirPods Pro earbuds even if the case is not in your pocket.

The AirPods Pro earbuds

To charge the AirPods Pro, the earbuds must be kept inside the case. If the case is not plugged in, the earbuds draw power from the external source. Both the case and the earbuds can then charge.

Charge the AirPods Pro Case

Use your Lightning to USB-C charging cables to plug your AirPods Pro into a power source.

If the case is in need of a charge, it will turn orange. If the case has been fully charged, it will turn green.

If the charging cable does not turn on when you plug it in, it is not receiving power. Make sure you have a working outlet and that the charging cable is not damaged.

The AirPods Pro earbuds can be placed in the case

  • Place each AirPod Pro earbud in its own slot, with the metal part facing down.

  • Close the lid once they are all in the case.

If the indicator light is orange (indicating that the earbuds must be charged) or green (indicating that they are fully charged), it will flash.

The light does not indicate how much charge is left in the earbuds. This is what the last step of this guide will tell you.

AirPods Pro Case and Earbuds Charge Level

This was a hard one for me to figure.. Let me tell you how to check the AirPods Pro’s charge levels.

  • Open a device that you have synced to the AirPods Pro (such your iPhone or Mac).

  • Place your AirPods Pro earbuds in the case and seal it.

  • Simply open the AirPods Pro’s lid.

  • Take a look at the screen of your synced device.

The charge levels for the AirPods Pro case as well as the earbuds should be visible (as shown above).
