Open-world video games are the best when it comes to measuring the size of a game’s map. Open-world video games have large maps that can be explored at any time. This is evident from the title.
Classic video games had a linear progression through story and map. This meant that players could travel from one point to another to complete a single quest. Although quests in open-world games may be linear in nature, they will take you around the map and allow you to revisit places.
Bethesda Softworks is one example of a videogame publishing company that specialises in creating games with open world maps. Some are quite large.
Here is our list of 37 largest open world video games by map size. Franchises specialise in creating large open-worlds. This means that you might see names from different franchises (Assassin’s Creed or Elder Scrolls for instance) on this list. Important to remember that not all developers publish the map size. Some gamers may have a different idea of the actual map size. This is my best estimate based upon as many resources similar to mine.
We are pleased to present our list.

Procedurally Generated maps: Minecraft
Let’s now take a look at video games that use massive procedurally generated maps. A procedurally generated map means that each player’s map will be completely randomised and different from the other players.
Fun Fact: Did You Know that Minecraft is a game created by one person originally?
Size of the Minecraft map
18,641 Square Miles
Perhaps the most barebones of open-world sandbox survival games on this list, Minecraft is a crowd favourite game that allows players to traverse a blocky procedurally-generated 3D world with infinite – to an extent – terrain. Players can mine for raw material that can be used to build tools, bases, explore other realms and eventually defeat the Ender Dragon.
It is difficult to calculate the Minecraft world’s size because it is procedurally generated. However, Notch, the game’s creator and programmer, explained it as follows: “The Minecraft world has 30 million blocks in its area. One block is one square metre. 30,000,000 metres is 30,000 kilometres. 30,000×30,000 = 900,000,000. Thanks, Notch!
Map of Dwarf Fortress
89,434 square miles
Bay 12 Games released Dwarf Fortress in 2006, a simulation of construction and management. In the primary game mode, players travel around a procedurally-generated fantasy world while controlling a group of dwarves trying to construct and manage a wealthy fortress. Players gather materials, defend their fortress from goblin invasions, as well as keep their dwarves safe. Each dwarf is unique and can have a set of skills that will make them more productive members of the fortress.
Dwarf Fortress was generally well-received, with many admiring the immersive and complex gameplay. However, many had issues with the difficulty of the game. Many people found the game slow and laborious. Dwarf Fortress, despite this, went on to influence games like Minecraft. It was displayed in the Museum of Modern Art in 2012 to illustrate the history of gaming.
No Man’s Sky
No Man’s Sky map size
18 Quintillion Potential Planets
An absolutely mammoth exploration and survival game, No Man’s Sky allows players to visit over 18 quintillion different planets (or 18,446,744,073,709,551,616). Each planet is unique in its ecosystem, environment, animals, and other features. It is built upon the four pillars exploration, survival and combat as well as trading.
The procedurally generated world is created by the AI of the game. Each game file will have a different name because the AI selects from the many planets stored in the game files and creates the world for players. It’s difficult to know how this size is translated into real-life terms because of this fact. It’s safe to say that this map is huge, as there are 18 quintillion possible planets to explore.
Please note: The attached map shows a system players may encounter while playing through the game.
Star Citizen map size
About 621,371 miles by 621.371 miles by 1,242,742 miles high
Cloud Imperium Games first announced Star Citizen in 2012. It is still in development. Cloud Imperium Games announced the game through a Kickstarter campaign, which raised over 2 million dollars for production. Star Citizen is still not released despite the huge initial funding. This has led to many criticisms of the developers.
Why mention a game yet to be released? The impressive map size! The map size will be incredible if the game delivers on its epic space-faring adventure, which allows players to traverse open spaces. Chris Roberts, a Star Citizen video game developer, said that the map they are currently working on will measure 1 million kilometres x 1 million km x 2 million kilometres high. These numbers are roughly equivalent to the miles listed earlier in 2015. They were revealed at a 2015 press conference. The developers later released a 400-kilometre high end-goal map with a volume 400 quadrillion cubic kilometres.
You might be wondering why this is included in a guide to map size. This stunning map, if the developers deliver, will be at the top of large procedurally generated video games maps. That is why it deserves to be mentioned. It should be on everyone’s radar.
