Windows Memory Diagnostic Vs. MemTest (Which Is Better?)

RAM is the most sensitive part of your computer’s build.

It is not unusual for RAM sticks to have issues that cause the entire system to crash.

It is important to keep your RAM clean and prevent it from causing damage to other parts of the computer.

There are tools that can be used to monitor RAM.

Windows Memory Diagnostic and MemTest, two of the most useful and popular utilities for this purpose, are MemTest and Windows Memory Diagnostic.

Learn more about how they work and which one would be best suited for your situation.

Windows Memory Diagnostic vs. MemTest (Which One Is Better?) )

MemTest86 is more powerful than the original MemTest, but it is no longer being actively developed.

We will be focusing on the comparison between WMD & MemTest86.

Windows Memory Diagnostic is an excellent RAM testing tool, but MemTest86 does a better job with more robust and effective tests.

MemTest86 can identify RAM issues.

This confirms that RAM can accept and return arbitrary data patterns. It also ensures that different bits of memory will not interact, leading to errors and corruption.

MemTest86, in conclusion, is the best memory testing tool.

But, using both would be the best option. MemTest86 is the primary test. If it detects an error in your RAM, run Windows Memory Diagnostic.

Other Memory Test Programs

1. MemTest86+

MemTest86+ is supposedly a newer version of MemTest86 that can be run on both x86 and x64 machines.

It is free to download and can be used in ISO format to burn to a USB flash drive, or disk.

MemTest86+ is remarkably similar to MemTest86+, but it doesn’t appear to be being actively developed anymore. It doesn’t have the same functionality as MemTest86.

MemTest86+ is a great second opinion. However, Windows Memory Diagnostic provides a more comprehensive set of tests because it works differently.

2. DocMemory Memory Diagnostic

DocMemory, a self-bootable and user-friendly RAM test tool, is free and available for download. It has a strict test pattern that tests the Extended Memory and the PC Base.

Utility has a Burnt In mode that can capture up 95% of soft memory failures.

It can test up to 64GB of memory.

DocMemory software comes with a huge catch.

Apart from the fact it is old and not updated in a while, you will need to create a bootable Floppy disk.

Many people are unable to use a floppy drive reader on modern computers.

DocMemory is a great tool for anyone who wants to troubleshoot an older computer or fix it.

Why would you want to test your memory?

It’s a good idea for you to inspect the health of your memory before installing RAM sticks into your computer.

The BIOS runs the POST test when you boot your computer for the first time. It checks the memory for errors but is not an exhaustive test.

The RAM could be the problem in many cases.

A bad RAM could be responsible for your computer not booting to the Operating System, or rebooting randomly.

The RAM is a possible suspect if you hear or see beep codes or error messages in the BIOS screen.

This applies whether your apps crash or you get the Blue Screen of Death.

Your motherboard and memory may have compatibility issues.

It is possible that you have overclocked RAM in order to make it run at higher speeds. If it fails, it could be because it cannot handle the load.

It is possible for a RAM stick to be incorrectly seated or the port could be damaged.

Each of these conditions has specific symptoms. The best thing to do when you notice one is to perform a RAM test with the RAM test software.

These devices function by writing data to your computer’s memory, and then reading it back.

Your RAM may be defective if the utility displays an incorrect value.

What is Windows Memory Diagnostic?

Windows Memory Diagnostic is a free software that tests RAM. It was originally offered by Microsoft.

This tool is a useful one that relies on solid tests to find out if there are any problems with your RAM or if it is working at its maximum performance.

Although some Windows versions include the program, it is only a very small download.

It is very easy to use, as no user intervention is necessary. The tests also run automatically.

The application is quite old, and it has not been updated in a while. However, it still works with any RAM type you have.

The name Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool may be misleading. However, it has nothing to do with the Operating System.

It will run on many systems without Windows installed.

Download the program, then create a bootable disk or ISO image to burn to a USB flash drive.

Windows Memory Diagnostic runs six standard tests using the default settings. These include:

  • MATS+ (cache enabled)
  • INVC
  • LRAND
  • Stride6 (cache enabled)
  • WMATS+
  • WINVNC

Windows Memory Diagnostic includes an extended version that offers more tests than the standard version.

The extended collection includes the following tests in addition to the existing list:

  • MATS+ (cache disabled)
  • Stride38
  • WStride-6
  • ERAND
  • Stride6 (cache disabled)

It’s not necessary to be familiar with the details of each test.

Understanding the names will assist us in the comparison later.

This software only tests the first 4GB RAM.

What is MemTest?

MemTest, a powerful and free memory testing program, comes in a lightweight package with an easy-to-use interface.

The app is easy to use and initiates the tests. After pressing one button, the utility will begin evaluating your RAM and checking data storage and retrieval processes.

The entire test can take several hours before it is completed 100%. The longer it runs, the more accurate the results will be.

While the app is running, you can still use your computer as normal.

It is possible to stop the test at any time and still get the results.

MemTest is only compatible with Windows computers.

Additionally, the MemTest86 utility was developed by PassMark.

This is a standalone, free memory testing tool for x86 and ARM machines.

Memtest86 supports 13 RAM types and all RAM types including DDR2, DDR3, DDR4, XMP and ECC.

Microsoft has verified the app’s secure boot and signed its code.

The product is fully supported. This means that the developers have planned updates and fixes to new memory types.

This software is compatible with Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista and XP. It also works well with Linux.

It is compatible with both 32-bit as well 64-bit computers.

It can scan up to 64GB RAM.

MemTest86 can be run as a standalone utility without the need to have an operating system installed.

It can execute its tests from a USB flash drive.

There are many advanced options in the software that can be used to test RAM. These advanced options are not required for a thorough RAM test.
