Windows is well-known because of its ease-of-use configuration and ability to connect external devices with its internal systems.
This connection may sometimes cause issues that can affect your experience with the system.
Let’s say, for instance, you listen to your favorite music and realize that the left speaker doesn’t work.

It’s enough for you to lose your groove and wonder what’s wrong.
This post will address every possible cause of a faulty left-side speaker and how to fix it.
The Left Speaker Is Not Working (Causes, Solutions)
1. Make sure the speakers are physically working properly
Check that your hardware is in good condition before you attempt to fix the problem.
It should work when connected to another device, such as your laptop.
If it works with another device the problem isn’t the speaker.
Also, you could connect your plugs to other jack ports of your computer to see if that works.
If the sound from the left speaker is not coming through, then the female plugs might be defective.
If the warranty is still valid, you can send it to the manufacturer.
If the sound is not coming from the left speaker’s left side, you need to find the cause.
The following are some examples:
They include a line jack, a microphone and a line-out.
Make sure that your speakers are properly plugged into the line-out port.
If you aren’t sure where each plug should be, try fiddling with each plug or jack to find the right sound.
Take a look at all the wires connecting the speakers and the computer.
Verify the entire length of the cables to determine if there is any physical damage.
This is particularly true if your pet likes to chew on things.
Even the slightest of wear can make the speaker unusable.
If there’s no visible damage to the wire, you can continue testing to confirm that it isn’t defective.
Unplug the cables connecting the left- and right speakers. Plug the left wire into the right speaker, and the right wire into the left speaker.
If one speaker is working and the other doesn’t, it’s most likely a problem with the cable.
An alternative way to verify that the wire is not the culprit is to have it replaced with an analog 5.1.1 connection.
If your left speaker is not producing sound, you can replace its cable to fix it.
C. The Plugs aren’t Making Good Contact
If the male or female plugs are not able to touch each other properly your left speaker becomes defective.
By gently pushing the plugs in, make sure they are completely inside the female sockets.
If that fails to solve the problem then make sure there’s nothing preventing the plugs from fully touching each other.
Clean the plugs using a cotton cloth that has been wetted with alcohol or contact spray.
D. Connect Headphones
Use headphones instead of speakers to help you determine if it is a hardware- or software-related problem.
Try plugging your headphones into the audio out jack to see if it works.
You may have software issues if you don’t have sound.
If there is no sound, the speaker may be at fault.
After you’ve performed the hardware check and checked that your speaker is working properly, you can look for software-related issues.
2. Perform Audio Troubleshooting
This saves time and allows you to avoid the hassle of fixing problems.
Windows 10 includes an option to troubleshoot audio problems. This detects any problems and automatically fixes them.
To start the audio troubleshooter
Enter Troubleshoot in the search bar in the lower left-hand corner.
You can click on this button to view the ” Troubleshooter” option.
By clicking on the buttons, you can choose which speaker you want to troubleshoot.
These choices include either built-in or optional headphones.
You should choose the default speakers, even if an external speaker is not available.
If you don’t like the options, consider customizing them.
You can click on ” Next” and the system will start troubleshooting.
After the process is complete, the troubleshooter can recommend solutions or find issues that may be the root of your problem.
Try what the system suggests and see if you left speaker works.
3. Check the audio volume
While this situation might seem simple enough to cause problems, it is more common for the problem in your PC to have a deeper cause.
For a visual check of the sound volume,
To open the runbox, press Windows+ R. Type ” Control panel”.
To access the Panel click OK.
To open the sound settings, locate ” Sounds” by clicking on it.
Click on your speaker to hit ” properties.”
Check the tab ” Levels” and check if there is a cross on the icons.
Click on the icon to activate your speakers.
Move the slider to raise the volume of the speaker and make sure there are no problems with the sound settings.
4. Select your speaker as the default
Your speaker won’t work if it isn’t set to the default sound output.
You will lose both speakers to this issue, but you can still try it for your left one.
Click on the speaker icon at the lower right-hand side of the taskbar and go to Playback Devices.
To highlight the speaker you choose, select ” Set default.”
If your speaker is not listed on the list it will not be enabled.
You can enable it by clicking on the empty space in the window, and then hitting ” Display Disabled Devices”.
Click on the speaker that appears in the list to enable .
5. Look out for Updates
Sometimes the problem is caused by a bad sound driver, which prevents the speakers from functioning properly.
Make sure to have the latest drivers so you can check if your problem has gone away.
There are several ways you can update drivers.
The easiest option is to rely upon Windows 10’s frequent updates to address specific issues.
First, ensure that your Windows version is the most current.
To verify, type “HTMODE_Updates ” into the search box. Next, click on “HTMODE_ Check for Updates “.
Any new updates will automatically be applied to your system, which may solve your problem.
You will need to update the sound card driver separately to fix the sound problem.
It’s easy to update your sound drivers.
Type Device manager into the search box. Search for Sound and video.
Click on the option below it to extend the menu, and then find your sound device within the list.
Right-click on your device name and choose ” Update Driver Software”. This will open a window asking you to choose how to begin the update.
For the most recent driver software , select ” search automatically.”
This will allow Windows to search for and automatically install new updates.
You could also visit the website for the audio card manufacturer and search for any updates to your sound card.
This is especially true when Windows can’t always find the most recent driver updates.
Another option is to choose a generic sound driver instead of updating your sound card.
For this driver to be enabled, follow the above steps for manually updating it by going to the Device Manager.
Right-click the driver to select ” Driver”.
Instead of selecting the first choice, click on the second option ” Browse to my computer for driver software.”
Click on ” Let’s choose from a set of device drivers for my computer” and you will be able to view a variety of options.
You can find ” Hi-Definition Audio Device” in order to set Windows 10 as your default driver.
You can also uninstall your current sound driver to install new drivers.
Instead of choosing ” Update” in this section, choose ” Remove” and then restart your computer.
Windows will automatically find a driver and install it when the computer is turned back on.
6. Change Your Default Sound Format
You can access your sound settings by clicking the sound icon at the bottom-right of the taskbar.
Navigate to settings and choose ” Property.”
Click on “Additional device characteristics” to open the tab “Advanced”.
You can modify the bit depth and sample rate under the ” Standard Format” option.
You can keep changing the settings until your left speaker works.
The best setting is 24-bit at 48000 Hz (studio-quality).
Click ” Apply” to save your changes.
Change other settings while you’re still in the window. This will prevent any sound-related issues.
Scroll down to the ” ” tab, and check the box next to ” All enhancements disabled.”
Click on the ” properties”, then click on the ” Spatial sound” button. Make sure this option is turned off.
Check the ” Advance” tab and uncheck the options for ” Exclusive Mod”.
Now play your audio and check if this has solved your problem.
7. You Can Check the Speakers on The Volume Mixer
Sometimes your volume mixer settings change for no apparent reason, or after a recent upgrade.
This allows you to see if everything is OK in the section.
Right-click on the speaker icon at the bottom left corner on the taskbar.
Select “Open volume mixer.”
You will see several options including ” Speaker,” and ” Systems Sound”. Make sure they are all set up correctly.
Verify that the sliders have been balanced so you can ensure your left speaker is not muted.
The sound quality of the speakers on the left and right should be checked.
You should ensure that they are both balanced.
8. Check If “Mono Audio” Is On
The ” mono audio setting” is one of the sound settings that can stop speakers from working.
In this example, only one speaker functions and the other is off.
You can verify that this setting is disabled by visiting the Control Panel.
Select ” Audio”, and then locate ” Switch on Mono Audio_” in the middle.
Make sure you set the toggle to ” Off”.
9. Check Your Sound Output Device
Windows occasionally misplaces an output device and tries to send your sound to another device like headphones or Bluetooth speakers.
This is especially true when Windows remembers that you previously used one or more of these devices.
You can’t get sound from your speaker when it’s not set as the playback system.
Although this can often cause no sound, it is worth checking if the output device you have selected is correct.
Right-click on the speaker icon at the bottom-right corner. Click ” Open sound settings.”
If the speaker icon is not visible, click the up arrow at the same location.
The first entry in this window is ” Choose an output device.”
To open a dropdown list, click the arrow to its right.
It contains a list listing all sound devices connected directly to your computer.
Make sure you select the right device for you and that the volume doesn’t go to zero.
10. Check Audio Services
Windows audio service is a Windows function that manages your audio devices.
If the service is not working properly, it can affect the audio device’s function and other effects.
Your left speaker may not be working due to an issue in the audio service.
To check if the left speaker is working again, restart the audio service.
Enter Services in the search field and click on ” Service” to open a new tab.
You can see a large list of Windows 10 services in this window.
Scroll down to Windows Audio, right-click on it and select Restart.
You can repeat the same steps for ” Windows Audio Endpoint Maker” as well as ” Remote Procedure Call”, to resolve any sound-related issues.
Note – After restarting the services, double-click on each one to check if it is set to auto.
11. Make sure to check the sound control panel settings
The left speaker may stop functioning properly if the sound Control Panel settings are altered.
Enter “Sound Settings”, and click “Sound Settings”, in the search box.
Right side of the screen, click ” Sound Control Panel”.
Click on ” Communications”, then select ” Dim the volume by 50%”, and see if that helps.
If that doesn’t work, select ” Don’t Do Anything.”
12. Update your BIOS
If none of these solutions work, your BIOS may be the problem.
It could be due to hardware incompatibility or some software updates.
This issue can be fixed by updating the BIOS firmware.
Different motherboards may have their own BIOS update process.
First, use the command prompt.
To do so, open the command prompt by hitting Windows + R and type the following command in the window: wmic baseboard get product, Manufacturer,version,serialnumber
Under ” Products” you will find all information necessary to update your BIOS.
Next, visit the website of the motherboard manufacturer to search for available BIOS versions.
If you don’t know which version your current one is, pick the latest version.
You can, for instance, find BIOS updates for your Intel motherboard on their support page.
Extract the BIOS Update file that came with your motherboard model.
Keep a copy of your firmware on a flash drive in case something goes wrong.
Follow the instructions in the readme file to install the updates.

You may not have the technical skills to solve this problem, so you can leave it up to someone more skilled.
